RESEARCH EXPERIENCE  BEFORE JOINING PhD:

5 months M.Sc. Dissertation experience; Thesis title- “A study on Crimmins aldol reaction using Evans chiral auxiliary” [Thesis advisor: Dr. Dhananjay Mondal, Assistant Professor, School of Chemical Sciences, CUG]

This work involved Asymmetric Organic Synthesis using Chiral Auxiliaries. In this current work, we envisioned to study the effect of using Evans chiral auxiliary (instead of using its Crimmins counterpart) on the yield and diastereomeric ratio of the Crimmins aldol reaction between benzaldehyde and boc-protected glycene. To be specific, we wished to study the change in scenario in the Zimmerman-Traxlar model transition state of the reaction when we replace favourable Ti-S interaction (standard Crimmins aldol reaction) with relatively less favourable Ti-O interaction (our case). We also wanted to study the electronic effect on the diastereomeric ratio of our reaction by substituting the para-position of the benzaldehyde phenyl ring with electron withdrawing and donating group subsequently. The final product of the overall reaction can serve as a potential precursor to several medicinally active molecule like- L-threo-phenylserines, Chloramphenicol etc.
